[Members Only] I’m Politically Unhoused

I can’t quite put my finger on it, but for some reason, when people described themselves as “politically homeless” in the past, I occasionally found it annoying and performative depending on the messenger. The irritation was slight; it barely registered. But it seemed like something people often said for attention or the sake of being contrarian. Like, we get it. Both parties suck, most candidates and politicians suck, our government in general sucks. But get to the point; who are you voting for? And if you aren’t, do you have any real plan for reaching your policy objectives, or is the idea to do nothing and call it enlightenment?

But for the first time in my life, that’s the only way I can describe the way I feel. Politically homeless. Or in contemporary terms, politically unhoused.

I don’t think there’s any singular figure or faction I’ve agreed with on everything, or felt 100% represented by. And I never expected to.

I’ve always been a little “out there” even on the right.

I was an immigration hardliner long before it was mainstream in the Republican Party. While I could see myself moving to the middle of nowhere to start a family, I’m a born and bred city girl and never pretended to be anything else even when it seemed like every single right of center influencer was urging their followers to flee to the countryside and start a homestead. And I didn’t perform traditionalism, modesty or sobriety for the Internet even after it became popular to do so.

And that was okay.

For better or worse, I’ve always been myself and spoken my mind.

I still felt like even if there were trends, or politicians, or talking points I found grating, when it came down to what really mattered, we were (mostly) on the same page.

But lately, I feel like I’m on an island of my own in a way I never have.

It feels like the political right has been roughly divided into the Loomer/Levin/Shapiro half rabidly supporting Israel and the Candace/Tucker/Megyn half rabidly supporting Islam.

And I don’t trust any of them.
